Herring Dockside Monitor

Agency/Location: We are seeking candidates to complete dockside monitoring in Gloucester, MA. The work to be performed is part of a multi-year contract with the State of MA DMF to quantify the bycatch of river herring in the mid-water trawl fishery. The collected data is used in comparative analysis with other monitoring programs such as the fisheries observer program. Additionally the data is reported to the industry help them avoid river herring bycatch by identifying areas of the ocean with high bycatch catch rates. With this in mind the ability to adhere to the established protocol, take detailed notes, and accurately identify the catch and by catch is essential. Due to the migration and movement of the herring stock and the fisheries management approach which utilizes time and area closures the need for monitors fluctuates significantly throughout the year. We are currently experiencing a high demand for samplers in the New Bedford area as the effort is currently fishing in Narragansett Bay. The needs for samplers can change significantly over the course of the year.
Responsibilities: Samplers are required to collect and sort baskets of the catch at set intervals as the vessels are being offloaded. Baskets weight between 60 and 80 lbs. Baskets must be sorted and weighed by species. Length frequencies and biological samples may also be taken from specific species if encountered. Given the unpredictable nature of fishing offloads could occur any day of the week at any time of the day. Often we are only given a few hours prior to vessels landing. When needed samplers typically work 10-12 hour shifts.
Compensation: Starting rates are $15.00 per hour. Overtime is paid for hours worked in excess of 40 hours in a week.
Qualifications: Preferred candidates will posses a BS, graduate degree or be in the process of completing coursework. They will have experience or familiarity with subsampling techniques. Candidates should have experience or the ability to accurately identify all fish species typical caught in the herring fishery. Experience and knowledge working in the field of fisheries is desired. Demonstrated understanding of sampling and data collection methodology is necessary. Candidates must also be able to lift 80 lbs, work in all weather conditions with long periods of time standing on their feet and to work on stands raised approximately 10 ft off the ground with proper safety equipment.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
